Corglass: our immediate forebears

The people we can put names to over the last two hundred years - the Boyles of Corglass and their relations, the Higginses, Bradys and Hartes come alive from the documentary traces they have left behind. Meet them here.

Saints, Successes, Soldiers and Sinners

There are always a few people who through determination, good or bad luck, or force of circumstances create a larger than life impression on their contemporaries. There are a few of these on the fringes of our family who add spice and interest to the story.

Here they are.

I'm not a trained historian (or even an untrained one) and have only a superficial familiarity with  the primary texts and range of material that a professional would use to construct a story such as this website aspires to.  I have been made keenly aware of the limits of my understanding when trying to draw some conclusions or clarify the sequence of events. I have no doubt that I will have made some elementary mistakes or barked up the wrong tree quite often. I would therefore be forever grateful to any readers who let me know about any errors of fact or interpretation that they find in these pages.

The content of this website is the result of many years of collecting bits and pieces of information, conversations with friends and relations, reading books and articles and internet surfing, but it is not a work of original scholarship and it relies heavily on the labours of others. More often than not, especially in the early years, I didn't keep detailed records of where I obtained information.  Initially, for my own interest, with no intention of disseminating it more widely, I copied stuff, and now I can't remember where I copied it from. There's very little original historical research here, but there's quite a lot of (unintentional) plagiarism!

All I can say is that I haven’t made it up, therefore it must have come from somewhere else, but I can’t always say from where. More recently, I have tried to pay more attention to my sources, and some credits are noted in the text, and listed in the references but there's still a lot of unattributed content.

However, if any reader recognises some passages or images as being ‘lifted’ from elsewhere without acknowledgement, I’d be grateful if they could let me know and I will gladly and gratefully acknowledge the correct authorship.
