From Ballyboyle to Corglass... a Boyle family's story
Part 2 - Corglass
THE FAMILY OF JOHN3 BOYLE AND BRIDGET BRADY
When John3 and Bridget Brady married they were both about the same age - she was 31 and he was 31 or 32. They had four sons in quick succession: Terence, John, Peter, and Patrick Joseph.

Terence was baptised on January 18 1891, according to the church records. His baptismal sponsors were Patrick Brady (probably his mother's brother) and Bridget Boyle (probably his Harte grandmother, who was still alive). It's possible he was baptised on the day of his birth, but more likely a day or two after. However, the birth was not registered with the civil authorities until October 8 1891, with the date given as July 30 1891 (possibly to avoid a penalty for late registration?)

John was born on April 2, 1892. Sponsors were James McNamee (probably a neighbour - there were McNamees in an adjoining farm) and Mary Brady, either Bridget's sister, or more likely, her mother.

Peter was born on April 22, 1894. The sponsors were James Harte and Joan Harte, probably relations of his grandmother Bridget Harte. The 1901 Census has a James (aged 70) and Jane (68) Harte in Clooncose. James would have been born about 1831, so it seems likely that he was Bridget Harte’s brother, an uncle of John3.

Patrick Joseph was born on October 20, 1895. His sponsors were Rev. John Brady (Bridget's brother) and Mary Reynolds (probably Bridget's sister who had married Francis Reynolds in 1891).

The list of sponsors is interesting in that it confirms the absence of any close relatives on the Boyle side. The sponsors are either on John3's mother's side (the Hartes) or from Bridget Brady's family.

Eventually, all four brothers left Ireland for Canada and the USA. Patrick returned to take over the farm at Corglass, where he lived and raised his family until 1948, when he moved to Killeen. Terence visited Ireland only once, after his retirement in the early 1960s (I remember meeting him on that visit). Peter as far as I know, never returned. John returned, but in tragic circumstances.

Terence (1891-1977), John (1892-1917),
Peter (1894- 1949) and Patrick (1895-1970)

For the 1901 Census, Bridget has completed it in her own hand. This is the first signature of any of the family that survives. Only three of her sons are listed - John was away on census night, staying with Bridget's sister Mary and her husband, Francis Reynolds. A farm labourer Patrick Smyth and a housemaid Rosanne Airlie are also resident. Bridget Brady was not averse to knocking a few years off her age. She gives her age as 30 when she was in fact 42. By 1911 she is more resigned to her age (almost!) and on the census form she admits to being 50.
