From Ballyboyle to Corglass... a Boyle family's story
Part 2 - Corglass
Terence 1891-1977
For some reason, Terence4 did not follow the traditional path of the eldest son to take over the Corglass farm. At the time of his marriage to Winifred Murtagh (or Murtha) in 1916, the marriage register describes him as a Farmer, and resident in Corglass, but on the birth register of his son Terence Anthony the following year, he is still a farmer but resident at Lisnanagh, which is Winifred's home place., and nearly 20 miles from Corglass. After their marriage it would appear that he moved into Winifred's home and farm rather than bring her to Corglass. Their were still at Lisnanagh in 1919 when their second son John was born.

This would make sense, as Winifred was the only child of her parents, and her father James was elderly and in poor health. In fact he died within six months of their marriage, in January 1917.
Though Winifred's father was from Longford, she was born in England, as was her mother. From the census records it appears they returned to Ireland between 1901 and 1911.

For whatever reason, it seems that Terence4 and family went to England and he worked in Liverpool in the garment business for two years. His uncle Terence Brady was well-established there at the time and may have provided him with some opportunities. Eventually he moved to British Columbia, Canada. There he contacted John Hart, a cousin on his grandmother's side for some assistance. Hart had done well for himself. He was a successful financial agent and politician, who in later years became Premier of British Columbia. Despite his reputation for openness and generosity, he didn't seem willing to share any of his success with his Irish relations. He refused to help Terence.

After two years in Vancouver, Terence4 went to New York, where he remained for the rest of his life. He returned to Ireland only once, in the early 1960's (when I met him). Winifred died in 1953 and he died on 19 April 1977, aged 86. They are buried at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, Westchester County, New York.

Terence is at the back, with spectacles. Can anyone name the others?
